Best sludge band ever. For serious.
Weedeater is definitely the most important band in my life. Not even Rwake comes close to Weedeater. They've cut 3 albums, but I can do you one better with a live bootleg, great quality recording. Weedeater is the child of "Dixie" Dave Collins (ex. Buzzov*en/Sourvein/Bongzilla), he performs the bass and the vocals. The first album ...And Justice For Y'all features his vocals as kind of a rough medium between the sound he developed in God Luck... and Sixteen Tons. Sixteen Tons is the second album by this great band, the album has a much shriller Dixie on vocals, sounding absolutely brilliant. I was hooked when I heard "I was born in South Carolina, man, I can't read". The album starts out strong, and keeps it coming. God Luck And Good Speed is by far my favorite, it's their latest release, and shows a maturing in their sound, to me it's what the other albums built up to, it was released 5 years after Sixteen Tons, which is a damn shame that we had to wait that long, but it was worth every bit of it. I think the crown jewel of the album is their very refreshing take on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gimme Back My Bullets. It's a damn shame that most of their fans have no idea who Skynyrd is, as demonstrated by their myspace page where half the comments on the pictures of Skynyrd are all "wow, you guys really look like them in this pic" or "I didn't know there were this many people in the band", or my personal favorite "who the hell are these fags". I mean really now. I'll definitely follow this up with my Skynyrd albums.

Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People

Mogwai are a post-rock band from Scotland. How 'bout that, eh? This is chill stuff. I think you should listen to this. Especially if you like stuff like Pelican and Sigur Ros.

At first glance, the album title Happy Songs for Happy People seems almost as ironic as the name of their previous album, Rock Action. After listening to the album, however, it's apparent that its title isn't just meant as a joke. Though "happy" isn't necessarily the first word that springs to mind when describing the band's intricate, brooding style, it is a word and emotion that is both simple and profound, much like the direction Mogwai's music takes here. Happy Songs for Happy People takes the focus and restraint of Rock Action to greater lengths, but it never feels like a rehash of their previous work. The palette of sounds the band uses -- which includes rolling guitars and pianos, swelling strings, persuasive but un-showy drumming, and occasional forays into distortion and electronics -- is a relatively small one, but the band uses it wisely on tracks as diverse as the lovely, understated "Kids Will Be Skeletons" (arguably the "happiest" song on the album) and the gloriously dense finale, "Stop Coming to My House," which piles layers and layers of distorted drums, guitars, and synths atop each other. Mogwai also employs its usual quietly beautiful/explosively noisy dynamic formula expertly, particularly on the gorgeous "Killing All the Flies," which feels much longer (in a good way) than four and a half minutes.

Old-school Mogwai fans disappointed by the relative brevity of most of Happy Songs for Happy People's songs should be pleased by "Ratts of the Capital," which, over the course of eight minutes, nearly reaches the epic proportions of the Young Team/Come on Die Young era. Once again, though, it's not merely a return to their old sound: The track begins with darkly chiming guitars and xylophones and then builds to a crushing climax, but even its heaviest moments are leavened with beauty, and its nearly symmetrical rise and fall make it fit perfectly with the rest of the album. Fortunately, though, the new techniques Mogwai explores on this album are just as satisfying, if not more so, than the band's familiar ones: "Golden Porsche"'s richly mellow bass and pianos sound more akin to Americana than post-rock, while "I Know You Are But What Am I?"'s shuffling, piston-like rhythm and twinkling synths are both brooding and childlike. A strangely dreamy, reverent feel winds through the album, surfacing on the Spiritualized-esque "Boring Machines Disturbs Sleep" and "Moses? I Amn't," which has a buzzing synth bass so deep it makes your brain vibrate. In some ways, Happy Songs for Happy People is almost too consistent -- by the time its second half rolls around, it's easy to take its dense beauty for granted. The upside is that it's one of those rare albums where you're convinced that you've just heard the song that is going to be your favorite -- until you hear the next song, and then the song after that. With Happy Songs for Happy People, Mogwai gets to have it both ways -- it's ironic and sincere, concise and expansive, challenging and accessible, and it's one of the band's best albums, no two ways about it.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A#∞

The car is on fire. And there's no driver at the wheel. And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides.

For Chris, because he seems to be exploring post-rock. Personally, I consider GY!BE to be essential listening to anyone showing interest in the genre and this is my favourite release by them.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (formerly punctuated Godspeed You Black Emperor!; abbreviated to GYBE) is a Canadian post-rock band formed in 1994 and based in Montreal, Quebec. One of the first musical acts to publish their albums through the Constellation Records label, they have since released three studio albums and one EP.

The nine-piece group is well-known for working on a near-orchestral scale, utilizing such techniques as wide dynamic ranges and prepared guitars with altered timbre—typically achieved using a screwdriver (a technique originally used by Sonic Youth)—to reach their often brooding sound. They are also known for their lengthy songs, which are composed in a classical manner with multiple movements.

The band has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2003 with no foreseeable plans to reconvene. A misquoted interview in February 2008 reported the band had broken up, but this was later confirmed as false.

F♯A♯∞ is the debut album of the Montreal-based band Godspeed You Black Emperor! (later punctuated Godspeed You! Black Emperor). It was released twice, first in 1997 as a vinyl LP by Constellation Records and then again on CD in 1998 by Kranky. The tracks are split into various named movements. The CD version was remastered and edited, and includes some extra material, including an extra track and a hidden track. The album focuses on the end of the world and thoughts of a coming apocalypse.

The original vinyl was limited to a pressing of 500 copies, and came in a handmade package with various inserts, including original photographic prints, posters, and a Canadian penny that had been crushed by a train. The record sleeve and jacket made no mention of the track titles. The names were instead scratched into the run-off groove space, accompanied by the catalog number and side indication. The final track is a locked groove that loops indefinitely on certain record players. The album's title is technically F Sharp, A Sharp, Infinity, a reference to the keys in which each side begins and to the endless loop at the end.

The track "East Hastings" is named after a street in Vancouver's blighted Downtown Eastside. With the band's agreement, an edited portion of the track was used in the soundtrack to Danny Boyle's 2002 horror film 28 Days Later, though it does not appear on the film's soundtrack album. Danny Boyle was heavily inspired by this album during the making of 28 Days Later, saying that the entire film was cut with this as the soundtrack in his mind.

The vox pop interviewee included at the beginning of the song "Providence" references "A Country Boy Can Survive" by Hank Williams, Jr., and is apparently the same man that quotes Blaze Bailey in "BBF3" on the band's Slow Riot for New Zerø Kanada. This sample was used by the band to end their performance of "Steve Reich" during their live session for VPRO Radio in 1998.

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice

"If you seek His monument, look around you."

The mystic Latin of the title, the grotesque artwork, the blatant Satanic themes; Deathspell Omega might appear at first glance to be another copy-cat Black Metal band, but with this album they marked themselves out from the scene. Structured like a 1970s concept double album, each 'side' opens with a prayer- to the Morningstar, of course. This serves to prepare the listener for the prog and avant-garde influences that they incorporated into their traditional Black Metal for this record, rightly recognised as one of the most important recordings in modern extreme metal. Perhaps not as good as the EP which followed, but certainly worth a listen.

Jack Kerouac - Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation

Basically this one is for [Hollow Point]. Kerouac speaking on the Beat generation, reading poems and the like. The last track is the most interesting, but the entire of the record is engaging and witty, with a feeling of spontaneity you expect from a Beat poet. Perhaps not quite as wonderful a poet as Ginsberg, Kerouac's reading makes the experience much purer, and it is clear that this is how his work was meant to be.

Hank Williams Jr.

am uping my three albums of Hank Williams Jr. the three volumes of greatest hits. Okay, so Hank Williams Jr. is a marvelous country singer and guitarist, who started out singing covers of his father's songs long after he'd died. Bocephus (as his father used to call him) soon found a different way of thinking, he became one of the first in a genre of "outlaw country", which was country singers that sang about the blues, but also sang about drinking, smoking, and womenfolk. None of this dead dog shit, that the genre is stereotyped for. You might recognize the name Hank Williams, as Hank Williams III is a prominent punk and metal drummer, drumming for crust punk act Arson Anthem. Hank Williams Jr. became known for his image of dark sun glasses, a full beard, and a hat, he wore this look to cover up scars all over his face due to a rock climbing accident, in which his brain was exposed to air for over 30 seconds, and his face had to be completely reconstructed. He survived and continued on doing what he was great at.

I ask you, please don't just write this off as shit because it's country, it's really good. And I know those of you that like the southern sound will enjoy this, if you like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, or bands like them, you'll like Hank.

Here is my copy of the 2 CD greatest hits collection of country legend Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash is a great musician, you'll be hooked when you first hear it. For me it was definitely Folsom Prison Blues that did it. Johnny went kind of crazy in his later years, but he kept up making great music til the day he died.

I hope you enjoy this, some wonderful shoegaze/post-rock. I only just found out that it's a concept album about companies merging a love story underlying it, but really, you wouldn't know. What you would know is that you're listening to some of the most atmospheric and intense music produced electronically. The haunting vocals, the noise influences and the drawn-out songs combine wonderfully to give a terrifyingly claustrophobic take on reality.

Deathspell Omega - Kénôse

Deathspell Omega are one of the best Black Metal bands ever, period. They take the raw ferocity of the likes of DarkThrone, but combine it with a complexity and ambience that would unsettle even the most sooty of Norwegians. This is modern Black Metal as it should be; uncompromising, yes, but not unintelligent. The Kénôse EP is an appendix to the preceding album, Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice, but is in many ways superior. The band show a greater control and understanding of their direction, and the avant-garde and progressive elements are more closely interwoven with the fabric of the music.

The Residents - The Commercial Album

The likelihood of you guys enjoying this is probably unlikely, but this is probably the Residents' best and most cohesive album. The Residents are one of the greatest musical groups of all time, having released albums since 1974 (having started recording long before that even) the group has nonetheless maintained total anonymity to this day. Their Dadaist approach to music has created some of the most mentally unhinged sounding music ever created, and it is worth listening to the band, even if it is just once.
This album takes the ideas of their previous records to their logical conclusion, with their pastiche/worship of pop music coming to the fore in a way unseen even on their brilliant Third Reich 'n' Roll album (consisting of Nazi speeches and imagery interwoven with barely recognisable covers of pop mainstays bu artists such as the Beatles and Elvis). The basic concept of The Commercial Album is that, due to the verse/chorus structure of pop music, there is only around one minute of original, unrepeated music in each song. Thusly, the Residents created 40 avant-garde pop tracks, without repeating any music, each around one minute in length. This CD reissue version has a few bonus tracks to labour the point, covers of various pop songs that perfectly match the Residents' pastiche of verse/chorus format.
This is essential listening for any fan of music, because it creates a sort of meta-musical commentary while remaining a brilliant pop album. Check it out if you like the Beatles, any noise, avant-garde or left-field pop.

The Cranberries - No Need to Argue & To the Faithful Departed

The Cranberries were an Irish band formed in Limerick who incorporated Alternative Rock and Pop influences in their music. After the success of their first album, Everyone Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, they entered the charts once again with No Need to Argue, which included their most enduringly popular single, Zombie, a protest song about the I.R.A. bombing of Warrington in England.
The next album, To the Faithful Departed, suffered somewhat due to deaths in the band's friends and family (which the album is dedicated to, and the title is a reference to), although it still managed to chart relatively highly. The album was somewhat less loved by critics, but despite lacking tracks as strong as its predeccessor, it's definately worth a listen.

7 Year Bitch - Sick 'Em, ¡Viva Zapata!, Gato Negro

7 Year Bitch are another grunge influenced Punk rock band in the vein of The Gits, whose career yielded 3 albums in a tumultuous few years which saw their close friend Mia Zapata of The Gits raped and murdered, their first guitarist Stefani Sargent overdose on heroine and the band's being dropped by Atlantic after their final album and first album for the label failed to sell as much as was expected.
As every strong female group in the early to mid ninties was, 7 Year Bitch are often wrongly associated with Riot Grrrl, but their sound is much more influenced by the bluesy, grunge sound of The Gits and their Seattle contemporaries.

Also, can anyone find out for me if the Gato Negro cover was drawn by Jaime Hewlett? It's very much in his style, and he did a few band's album covers during the '90s.

Down

Some of you may know me well enough to know that I leak various fluids when the words "sludge metal" are ever uttered. Some of you may know me well enough to know that Down is one such band that can make me metaphorically melt into a puddle of goo.

Down is a supergroup composed of members from Corrosion of Conformity, Pantera, Crowbar, eyeHATEgod, Superjoint Ritual and Kingdom of Sorrow. Basically made up of every sludge giant ever. Anyways. Guess who the singer is... none other than Pantera's Phil Anselmo. Now for those of you who don't really get into Pantera (for obvious reasons) don't let that be a turn off, Phillip shows true prowess with his vocal chords, highs, lows, everything you can imagine. And most of the time he doesn't come off as a stereotypically aggressive "metal singer". Their guitarist is Pepper Keenan, from COC (lawl). Riff laden and expertly executed, Down is truly one of the great bands out there on the metal scene today.

Even if you aren't really a sludge fan, this is an easy Southern Rock-y, classic rock-y, band to get into. They don't just play "heavy metal" as would be described by today's youth, they also play some of the best southern rock I've heard since Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Soviettes - LP III

The Soviettes were a great pop-punk/punk band that played good old-fashioned fun punk with a bit of an edge and a neat line in naming their albums (LP I, LP II and LP III). Although they were signed to Fat Wreck Chords for this, their final album, they never let up, and it's arguably their best release. This one's a real grower, as I didn't really love the album first play, but now I couldn't criticise most of the tracks. My favourites and especially recommended tracks are, Multiply and Divide, Paranoid Cha Cha, Middle of the Night and Together. A solid, snarling album that is a must-own.

The Gits - Enter: The Conquering Chicken & Frenching the Bully

The Gits are one of the most important punk bands ever, because they influenced so many female artists, inspiring particularly the Riot Grrrl movement and even collaborating with Joan Jett on an album. Sadly their lead singer Mia Katherine Zapata was raped and murdered late in the recording of their second album, Enter: The Conquering Chicken, meaning that the rest of the band had to finish the album and disbanded soon after. These are the two original albums, although many collections and lives have also been released. Both are reissues and have lots of live versions tacked on the end, which are brilliant in their own right.
Thankfully, Zapata's rapist was caught and charged. Punk will always be a little less special without her, though, and these albums stand testament to her unique bluesey take on the genre.

The Shins - Oh, Inverted World

This is one of the best modern pop albums I have heard in months. I first heard the track New Slang in Zach Braff's brilliant directoral debut Garden State, and checked out this, The Shins' debut album on that recommendation. I was not disappointed. Mixing the 'sunshine pop' sound with alternative rock, this sound like the Beach Boys covering Sgt. Pepper in the early '90s. One of the best CDs I have ever heard, I don't think there is a weak track on it.

Discount - Ataxia's Alright Tonight

Discount are one of the best pop-punk bands out there, and this, their debut, showcases their best qualities very nicely. Usually pop-punk bands tend to be a little air-headed lyrically, and 'just for fun', but Discount aren't too bad on this side either, which is another reason to love them. If you like Team Dresch, the Soviettes or any feel-good pop-punk for that matter, Discount are essential listening.
Perhaps this review explains the band's appeal better than I can:
Discount is one the best bands to come out of the 90s, or at the very least one of the best punk bands. Yet they have none of the incendiary bombast found in seminal groups like Los Crudos or Born Against. Part of it may be that Discount is a pop-punk band - that's right, you heard me. When did pop-punk become such a bad word? It doesn't have to be. Discount is pure. Riffs that cut and stick to the inside of your skull, perfectly composed songs, and some of the best lyrics and most honest vocals ever caught on tape...
Everything this band recorded is more than worth your hard-earned dollar. This album is a triumph - it lacks the clearer production of some of the later material (not that I oppose a good recording), and that roughness really complements the songs and gives them a lot of charm. And some of their best songs are right here on this little piece of plastic: the inescapably catchy "K.V. T-Shirt", and the absolute pop-punk masterpiece "Lights Out", which is anthemic as fuck and terribly heart-breaking. Discount's songs are serious. This is music that doesn't wink and smile. It's not ironic or sarcastic. It isn't humorless, but it's not trying to make you laugh. It makes you feel. Discount is so honest that it fucking hurts.

Descendents - Milo Goes to College

One of the most important punk albums of all time, Milo Goes to College is endless in its appeal, and never ceases to entertain. At only 22.32, it may seem short to those of you more used to metal epics, but it's always worth a listen. Interestingly, it has been theorised that we can blame the Descendents for adding -age on the end of things in internet slang (pwnage, etc).

Clutch is a fucking crazy, super bluesy rock band from my home, MOTHA FUCKIN' MARYLAND. There lyrics are fucking wack, there jams are so tight, I cum every time I listen to them. They have grown to be one of my all time favorite bands. This is why I bring them to you, The Stormbeard Guild. This was my first experence of theres, and I was in love as soon as the second track "Big Fat Pig" came on. No, for real, if you dont at least give this album a try, I will never talk to you again, and you wont be my BFF any more

ZZ Top

Here are two albums by classic Blues-rock band ZZ Top. Here is the 1992 Greatest Hits and One Foot In The Blues. The Greatest Hits is a great album, all of their greatest hits throughout the years, some of my favorite songs are on this album like Sharp Dressed Man, that shit was the jam when I was little. It's a very good album, a lot of the classics like Legs, La Grange, and I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide. One Foot In The Blues is another compilation album, they made it to make a cohesive album of all of their songs that qualify as blues songs. A lot of great songs like A Fool For Your Stockings and She Loves My Automobile.

Tom Waits! The bark-voiced bluesman himself. We all love a bit of him, so get this in your ears.

Mule Variations is an album by Tom Waits, released 1999 on the ANTI- sub-label of Epitaph Records. It was Waits's first studio album since 1992's Bone Machine (the later The Black Rider was a collection of songs originally written for a play).
