Cat Power - You Are Free

Probably Cat Power's most critically acclaimed album, You Are Free is full of stand out tracks. I believe Eddie Vedder guests on one, and Dave Grohl is responsible for the drums across the album. The centrepiece is, as ever, Chan's voice though, which sounds clearer and more confident than on previous releases. Some claim the middle of the album drops a little, but really, I think most of the tracks are strong and have no real complaints, even of Vedder.

The Tallest Man on Earth

Artist: The Tallest Man on Earth
Album: Shallow Graves
Genre: Folk, Indie
Myspace: www.myspace.com/thetallestmanonearth

"Over the last half-century, the tag "Dylanesque" has been slapped on so many mediocre folksingers clutching battered Moleskines that it's become a meaningless joke, a critical hiccup, a silly, lazy way of invoking an age-old raspy voice/acoustic guitar combo. Still: It's exceptionally hard to talk about Scandinavian folksinger the Tallest Man on Earth (also known as Kristian Matsson) without mentioning Bob Dylan's early years, mostly because Matsson manages to embody Dylan's effortlessness so well, infusing his songs with a detachment that, miraculously, is neither cold nor alienating. Like Dylan, Matsson is so natural a songwriter that these tracks feel predetermined, tumbling out of his mouth with an ease and grace that's increasingly uncommon.

Shallow Grave is his full-length debut. The production is appropriately scrappy, and it seems relatively safe to assume that the album was recorded live with one microphone-- accordingly, we hear the scratch of fingernails on string (and, on occasion, the chirping of birds in the background), made privy to each tiny exhalation and sigh. Matsson is an adept fingerpicker, and his guitar is easily as central as his voice, which is high, crackling, and rich. Much like Dylan himself, Matsson has mined the American south for inspiration, and his frantic strumming and front-porch poetry recall everyone from the Carter Family to Lead Belly to, most noticeably, country bluesman Mississippi John Hurt."

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (w's are pronounced v's in Hawaiian Ca-Mah-Cah-Vi-Voh-Oh-Le) commonly called Bradah Iz to the residents of my islands was a great man, he did a lot to unite the peoples of Hawaii, and his death was a great loss to us all. He was a marvelous musician from the island of Oahu. I offer up his 1993 album Facing Future. I really think Chris will be into this due to his widely varied tastes, and I think Steven will dig it because of the song Hawaiian Sup'pa Man, and others. He was a ukulele player and had a beautiful voice, I find it sad that the style of beautiful song and writing in Hawaiian music has fallen out of disuse these days.

Iz spent the last part of his life battling weight problems, he finally died due to respiratory illness caused by his 736 pounds on his 6' 3" frame. The Hawaiian flag flew at half mast, and his koa wood coffin was displayed in the capital, the third person to be awarded this honor. His funeral was massive, hundreds of people from all of the islands came in to attend, his ashes were spread in the pacific.

Southern Isolation

Okay, here is Southern Isolation's one and only album. Southern Isolation is a southern rock/folk band from Louisiana. The duo comprises Phil Anselmo and (then) wife Stephanie Opal. The band is made up of guitar and vocals, provided by Phil and Stephanie, respectively. Stephanie shows that she has a truly beautiful voice, singing lead in all the songs. Philip provides backing vocals on a couple of the tracks, and lead in the last song Southern Man I Am.

This album is executed beautifully. It's truly a shame that they only released the self titled. Just like with crust punk band Arson Anthem we're shown that Philip has mastery over the guitar as he does over singing. I honestly think all of you will get into this really easily, particularly I think Chris will dig it because he's got a penchant for female singers.

Tom Waits

Big Jack Earl was 8'1
He stood in the road and he cried
He couldn't make her love him
Couldn't make her stay
But tell the good Lord that he tried

Tom Waits! The bark-voiced bluesman himself. We all love a bit of him, so get this in your ears.
