Baroness

I humbly offer you the discography of Baroness. One of the kings of modern Sludge, from Savannah, Georgia. The members originally were from up in Virginia, but moved on down to Georgia to start up Baroness. Fronted by guitarist, artist, and vocalist John Dyer Baizley, Baroness features intelligent guitar work, eclectic stylings (in the vein of such fellow Georgia bands as Kylesa and Jucifer), and amazing musicianship. I personally recommend the entire discography, but if you want specific "get this one right fucking now" then I'd say go with Red Album, that's what I started off with. BUT, I'm also a big fan of First.

Choke Their Rivers With Our Dead

North Carolina crust punk/sludge act Choke Their Rivers With Our Dead. This was a limited release, from a summer tour they did a while back. CTRWOD was made out of several hardcore bands out of NC, and I gotta say I fucking love it. I'm particularly fond of I Came Out Of North Carolina Flying. The vocals are fucking great, female fronted, there's only 4 tracks, but it's definitely worth it. This band is constantly on my sludge play lists and compilations. They're splendid.

Jucifer is a two piece sludge metal band signed to Relapse Records. They are frequently described as a cross between Portishead and Black Sabbath or The Melvins.. The band's members include Amber Valentine on lead guitar and vocals, and her husband Edgar Livengood on drums. They travel in an RV and are "nomadic in nature," preferring to tour constantly, rather than following the normal practice of album release/tour/time at home. Jucifer is notable for the extreme volume at which they perform, as well as the dichotomy between the recorded material and the "intensity" of their live shows.

Amber Valentine is very pretty. I have their two most recent albums for you, today. If Thine Enemy Hunger (2006) and L'Autrichienne (2008). There is a pretty sweet changing up of vocal work from siren to fucking banshee screech. Enjoy.

Boris

I offer up the drone gods from Japan: Boris. I say "Drone gods" but in truth Boris has spanned so many genres that it's hard to put a for sure name on them. I can't offer up their full discography, but I can offer up what I have. Amplifier Worship, Feedbacker, and Empty Bottle (Live at Chicago). This is a marvelous band that is worth checking out no matter what genre is your niche. Plus they have a guitarist who sure is purdy.

Here is the EHG discography I promised.
EHG is the founder of the genre of Sludge Metal which I am in love with. Mike William's has this voice, it's an unintelligible scream, a miserable wail. The music can be very bleak at times, and energetic at others. EHG is a must have for any fan of Sludge, to truly appreciate the genre you have to be able to appreciate its humble NOLA origins.

On another note, the members of EHG, along with other NOLA musician Phil Anselmo have been a huge factor in reviving the New Orleans music scene, in the aftermath of Katrina. Many people lost everything, Mike Williams was no different, after going homeless and getting clean after Phillip bailed him out of a drug charge, he became a leader on the revival scene. If you can't respect that, you can't respect much.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

I humbly offer 2 Greatest Hits compilations of the Southern Rock gods Lynyrd Skynyrd the 10 track Encore Edition and the All Time Greatest Hits. These two albums contain some of the greatest southern rock songs of all time including Sweet Home Alabama, What’s Your Name?. Gimme Back My Bullets, and Gimme Three Steps. To truly appreciate certain genres you have to appreciate the genres they in turn pay homage to. This is directed at you Sludge fans, southern rock is a big inspiration in the southern sludge bands, and Lynyrd Skynyrd is at the forefront, particularly with Weedeater.

Big Business

So Yeah, Big Business is a sludge band out of Washington. Initially a duo of bass and drums (they now have a guitarist), they've done a lot of work with The Melvins, though I don't have (a) Senile Animal, their split. I do, however, have Here Come the Water Works (thanks to Antonius Block), and I also have for you their album Head for the Shallow. Which I recently picked up off of Sludge Swamp. I've spun it once and re-upped it for this blog. Some of the lyrics on Here Come the Water Works are kinda batshit, a reminder of The Melvins, but the music is totally fucking great. These guys definitely know how to jam.

Neurosis

Okay, here is Neurosis’ album The Eye of Every Storm. I have to admit that it was kind of a hard thing for me to like, the first song didn’t much do it for me, but I kept listening and I was blown away. The song No River to Take Me Home is a favorite of mine, it’s heavy, it’s melodic, and it’s brooding. Neurosis was actually a band that took me a while to track down (much like Isis), and when I finally found it I had to listen a couple of times before it clicked. I am also giving the link to the album A Sun That Never Sets, which I haven’t had a chance to listen to yet, but I’m looking forward to.

Acid Bath

Here are two Acid Bath albums. First is the Hymns of the Needle Freaks demo, which is very good, in some ways better than the full release of the album. Acid Bath were a band out of the Louisiana metal scene, which just makes me love them more. They didn't get nearly as much recognition as they deserved, Venus Blue could have made it as a radio song had it not been for the graphic lyrics. Their mainstream appeal wasn't too high, and this could be accounted for with their graphic lyrics and their usage of serial killer paintings as album covers. The second album I'm putting up is Pagan Terrorism Tactics, which is a MASTERPIECE. The songs Bleed Me An Ocean, Graveflower, and Venus Blue always get to me. Both albums are lush with masterful vocal work, beautiful clean vocals being complimented by harsh screams and growls.

Sourvein

Alright so here is the Sourvein EP Ghetto Angel. I gotta say, I've been looking for some Sourvein for a long time, without luck, until I stumbled across this. This is a really good album. It's droney, it's sludgy, it's crunchy, it's just fucking great. Anyway, Ghetto Angel opens with the song Nightwing, which is a decent enough song. The vocals are rather odd, they kind of remind me of Buzzov-en, actually.

Literally just got this shit myself. Hail!Hornet is a fucking MEGA sludge band if I ever saw one, members of Sourvein, Weedeater, Alabama Thunderpussy, etc. etc. So shit download it enjoy this mother fucker.

Self Titled

Southern Isolation

Okay, here is Southern Isolation's one and only album. Southern Isolation is a southern rock/folk band from Louisiana. The duo comprises Phil Anselmo and (then) wife Stephanie Opal. The band is made up of guitar and vocals, provided by Phil and Stephanie, respectively. Stephanie shows that she has a truly beautiful voice, singing lead in all the songs. Philip provides backing vocals on a couple of the tracks, and lead in the last song Southern Man I Am.

This album is executed beautifully. It's truly a shame that they only released the self titled. Just like with crust punk band Arson Anthem we're shown that Philip has mastery over the guitar as he does over singing. I honestly think all of you will get into this really easily.

Isis - The Mosquito Control/ The Red Sea, Japanese Reissue (2002)

This is a cool little Reissue I stole from one of my favorite blogs, appropriately named Stonerobbi. This is a reissue of two early Isis EPs, Mosquito Control and The Red Sea. It also has two covers from the "sawblade" EP, Streetcleaner (Godflesh cover), and Hand of Doom (Black Sabbath cover). Early Isis is fucking brutal, raw ass sludge ware you can just start to hear there post rock influences. I hightly suggest this to any sludge or Isis fan.

Mastodon - Remission

Mastodon is a Proggy Sludge group for the good ol' US of A. This is there first album Remissions. Its there most raw and sludgy album, and one of my all time favorites.

David Allan Coe

It's been a while, brothers. I come back to you from the Wilderness of North America with a humble offering from the Southland.

David Allan Coe. What can I say? The country man that was so metal. Known for his x-rated albums and his sometimes rank subject matter, David Allan Coe is an essential addition to the collection of any fan of outlaw country, southern rock, even some of the bluesier varieties of sludge metal. DAC is one bad mother fucker, as you can tell from such songs are Long Haired Redneck, Son of the South, and Willie, Waylon, and Me.

Musically, David has a very strong voice that he can tune to a lot of different sounds. From the mournful You Never Even Called Me By My Name to the gospel Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone) and then to the biting honky tonk sound of Long Haired Redneck.

Holy fuck. This shit is bleak. Like majorly fucking sludge metal, for fans of bands like Eyehategod and Noothgrush, that high energy, doomy, fucking sludgy fucking music. Leechmilk is a band from Atlanta, Georgia a destructive combination of sludge grind and punk. These guys will fuck you up, the album is relatively short, but it'll blow you away.
